Introducing...

Today in my 3rd grade class, I asked them what they would think of having a tug-of-war.  Only, with a twist.  It would be the 3rd grade boys against the 7th, 8th, and 9th grade boys along with the men who teach here and the men who help keep the school clean.

“What do you think would happen?”  I asked the class.

“We would win, if God was helping us!” answered a student.

(apparently the previous lessons we’d been studying in our Christian Formation class had made an impact)

“Yes, but if it was just you and the other team, WITHOUT God helping…how would you feel?”  I asked, trying to salvage what was left of an illustration of being unevenly matched with someone and feeling too small for the task.

“We would feel like they were too strong, like David and Goliath, but then if we ask God, he can help us.”

…so much for leading up to our lesson on David and Goliath.  Pretty soon, the boys were excitedly making up scenarios that would be more well-matched and were getting geared up to show their strength.

“When will we have the tug-of-war, Miss??”

I had to break the news to them that we were just imagining what it would be like…to their great disappointment.

…thus began our lesson on David and Goliath.

The Line

Today I walk the line of truth
A line that beats with life
It was that beat that drew me here
Pulsing. Flowing. Love.

Love in truth
Love in truth
Its rhythm drives my soul

I walk in beat and laugh with joy
Its pulse is in my feet
I do not fear, for truth is strong
And love - its taste is sweet

Then one day the line I walk
Felt different and stretched
The rhythm once beneath my step
Shook rapidly then stopped

I paused and looked from side to side
The line had split in two
I looked down one and saw no love
The other side - no truth

I stood in shock and looked at both
The stillness sinking in
The silence stopped my beating heart
I fell and could not rise

You picked me up and said "Just choose"
My face was pale and blue
"Let's walk down love whose taste is sweet
Or is it truth you choose?"

"I must have both - they form one line"
I whisper then I gasp
"Please join them back - restore its life
Or I will soon lose mine"
