Today in my 3rd grade class, I asked them what
they would think of having a tug-of-war.Only, with a twist. It would be
the 3rd grade boys against the 7th, 8th, and 9th
grade boys along with the men who teach here and the men who help keep the
school clean.
“What do you think would happen?”I asked the class.
“We would win, if God was helping us!” answered a student.
(apparently the previous lessons we’d been studying in our
Christian Formation class had made an impact)
“Yes, but if it was just you and the other team, WITHOUT God
helping…how would you feel?”I asked,
trying to salvage what was left of an illustration of being unevenly matched
with someone and feeling too small for the task.
“We would feel like they were too strong, like David and
Goliath, but then if we ask God, he can help us.”
…so much for leading up to our lesson on David and
Goliath.Pretty soon, the boys were
excitedly making up scenarios that would be more well-matched and were getting
geared up to show their strength.
“When will we have the tug-of-war, Miss??”
I had to break the news to them that we were just imagining what it would be like…to their
great disappointment.
